Brooklyn-based publisher Blurring Books has created a limited edition FLACO tote to promote the forthcoming book, FLACO: The Owl Who Escaped Captivity and Won the Hearts of the World, to be published February, 2025, in time for the major Flaco anniversaries (2/2/23 escape / 2/23/24 passing) and the New York Historical Society's exhibition, "The Year of Flaco," Jan 31 - July 6, 2025. The book launch will be at Strand Bookstore in early February, 2025. 

Flaco the 13 year old Eurasian eagle-owl made global news when an unknown liberator cut a hole in his bus-stop sized cage in the Central Park Zoo, setting him free. For one year he evaded recapture and lived free in New York City, roosting in a series of favorite trees in Central Park, hooting from the tops of buildings and water towns, and amassing a huge social media fan base who followed his daily exploits. (He died a year later, after a window collision, and the toxic effects of pigeon herpes and rodenticide.) Hundreds of mourners gathered for a remembrance ceremony at the base of Flaco's favorite oak tree in Central Park a week after Flaco's death. The book will include photos of Flaco, the artwork that he inspired, and handmade memorial objects left at the base of the tree. Ecologist Carl Safina has written the foreword. 

A portion of the proceeds (for tote and book) will go to the local nonprofit, The Wild Bird Fund. The book's editor is a longtime Park Slope resident. 

The tote is made of durable, 100% cotton canvas and was screenprinted by hand and will be available for a limited time. Bag measures 14.25” x 15”.

  • We process all orders during regular business hours, Monday-Friday. Depending on your shipping preferences at checkout, it may take 3-7 business days to be delivered to you, and we ship within 2-3 business days of your order.

  • We ship to the contiguous United States (also known as the lower 48 states). Unfortunately, we currently do not ship internationally.

  • While we don’t currently offer individual gift wrapping, each order is packaged to be giftable right out of the box. If you would like us to include a handwritten note in your order, leave a note at checkout.
